In 1937, Sun Valley hosted the inaugural Harriman Cup, an international downhill race that brought many of the world’s top skiers to Idaho and helped cement Sun Valley’s place on the global skiing stage. Named after Averell Harriman, the race quickly became one of the most prestigious downhill events of its time, drawing elite competitors from Europe and North America. With its long course, steep drops, and remarkable speeds, the Harriman Cup showcased both the dramatic terrain of the surrounding mountains and Sun Valley’s growing reputation as a world-class destination for skiing and winter sport.
More than a competition, the Harriman Cup helped put Sun Valley on the map.
