Saratoga Springs, New York, first drew visitors for its mineral springs, which rise through fissures along the Saratoga Fault and were valued long before the resort era. Racing followed in 1863, when John Morrissey organized the first meet at what is now Saratoga Race Course, the oldest thoroughbred track in America. Morrissey's gambling house later became the Canfield Casino, which closed in 1907 amid an anti-gambling crusade and is now home to the Saratoga Springs History Museum.
This print draws on the faceted, geometric look of Art Deco sporting posters, with a golfer in orange and cream built from angular planes against a bright blue wedge and a sunny yellow sky. A green valley with small figures on the course and a red-roofed pavilion sits in the middle distance. Along the bottom edge, the words Golf, Tennis and Music run across a tennis racket and violin, naming the pastimes of a summer in the Spa City.
