Le Crocodile sits on the ground floor of the Wythe Hotel at 80 Wythe Avenue, occupying one of Williamsburg’s most recognizable corners. Opened in December 2019, the restaurant describes itself simply as an all-day neighborhood brasserie, serving French fare from breakfast through dinner. Despite the scale of the dining room, there is something distinctly neighborhood-oriented about it: long lunches, oysters at the bar, an afternoon drink, or dinner that stretches late into the evening.
The menu takes its cues from the great French brasserie tradition without treating it too preciously. Onion soup with Gruyère, escargots, pâté, steak tartare, frites, profiteroles, and an extensive French-leaning wine list sit alongside dishes that feel unmistakably at home in contemporary Brooklyn. Set within the industrial architecture of the Wythe Hotel, the result feels less like an imitation of Paris and more like a Brooklyn interpretation of the neighborhood brasserie: lively, familiar, and built for returning to again and again.
More than anything, Le Crocodile succeeds in making the French brasserie feel like a natural part of Williamsburg. Breakfast can turn into lunch, lunch into an afternoon glass of wine, and dinner into a considerably longer evening than originally planned. It is the sort of restaurant that works as well for an ordinary Tuesday as it does for a celebration, which is perhaps the best definition of a true neighborhood brasserie.
Artwork: This is a playful connection between early European advertising poster design and a modern Brooklyn brasserie. The dark charcoal, black, green and cream tones provide for a simple, yet bold statement, only fitting for a name of like "Le Crocodile" - will fit particularly well at home in kitchens, dining rooms, home bars, restaurants, and gallery walls.
