Since opening in SoHo in 1997, Balthazar has become one of the World's most celebrated and iconic French brasseries. Created by legendary restaurateur Keith McNally - the man behind The Odeon, Pastis, and Minetta Tavern - its bustling dining room has welcomed generations of New Yorkers and international visitors alike, from morning pastries and coffee to late-night dinners. Renowned for its classic French cuisine, exceptional seafood tower, daily baked breads and pastries from Balthazar Bakery, and unmistakable Parisian atmosphere, it remains an enduring landmark of the city's dining culture.
Inspired by an original 1912 French advertising poster we discovered in the summer flea markets of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Provence, this artwork pays homage to the golden age of European poster design. Originally created by legendary poster artist Leonetto Cappiello to promote a French cigarette brand, the composition has been restored and reimagined as a tribute to Balthazar, preserving the dramatic color, bold typography, and theatrical spirit of the original. The French proclamation, "Je ne mange qu'à Balthazar" ("I only eat at Balthazar"), transforms the historic advertisement into a playful celebration of one of New York City's and the World's most beloved restaurants.
