The Golden Swan

The Golden Swan occupies a historic townhouse at 314 West 11th Street in Greenwich Village, drawing its identity from both the character of the neighborhood and a particularly colorful piece of old New York history. The restaurant spans two distinct spaces: the Wallace Room downstairs, an intimate neighborhood tavern, and a more refined dining room above, with a menu shaped by French and Mediterranean influences. Dark woods, warm lighting, cocktails, and the architecture of the townhouse give the restaurant the atmosphere of a classic Village establishment.

The name reaches back more than a century. The original Golden Swan was a Greenwich Village saloon frequented by an unlikely mix of artists, writers, bohemians, and members of New York’s street gangs. Painter John Sloan and playwright Eugene O’Neill were among those associated with the old tavern, while its proprietor Thomas Wallace, a former prizefighter known as “The Blind Boss,” became one of the characters surrounding its legend. That collision of art, nightlife, and a slightly less respectable side of New York is what gave the original Golden Swan its reputation as a kind of den for artists and thieves.

The modern Golden Swan carries that history forward without trying to recreate the old saloon literally. There is still something distinctly Greenwich Village about the experience: a drink downstairs, dinner upstairs, an old townhouse filled with conversation, and a restaurant whose personality feels connected to the writers, artists, restaurants, bars, and characters that have defined the neighborhood for generations.

Artwork: This artwork reimagines The Golden Swan through a vintage German advertising poster with bold lettering, flat fields of color, and a single memorable graphic image. Its stylized white swan and mirrored reflection have been reworked for The Golden Swan, replacing the commercial identity of the original with the name and character of the Greenwich Village restaurant. More than a century after this style of advertising first appeared across European streets and railway stations, its simplicity still feels remarkably modern. Reimagined in deep blue and warm cream, the artwork is particularly suited to kitchens, dining rooms, home bars, studies, and gallery walls.
