Occupying a prime corner in the heart of the West Village, Fairfax has become one of New York City's most celebrated neighborhood taverns. The procession of international flags surrounding the globe echoes the restaurant's iconic interior, celebrating the spirit of international travel, hospitality, adventure and the cosmopolitan character of the city itself.
Part of the composition is from an original early twentieth-century advertising poster discovered at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, California. The original composition with a style that traces back to the 1900s to the 1920s reflects the bold graphic language that defined Europe's golden age of poster design at this time. While the artist remains unknown, its dynamic composition and theatrical use of color bear strong stylistic similarities to the work of Giorgio Muggiani, Leonetto Cappiello, Mario Rossi, and other masters of advertising posters who were commissioned by Martini.
