East Hampton, on the South Fork of Long Island, was settled in 1648, and its early settlers came from Maidstone, England. In 1891 a group of well-to-do summer residents founded the Maidstone Club, named for that English town, as a social club for summer life by the ocean. Tennis came first, followed by swimming and beach access, and golf arrived a few years later. The club still keeps both an 18-hole and a nine-hole course.
This print draws on the angular, streamlined look of Art Deco travel posters, with a golfer mid-swing and a tennis player rendered in smoky grey planes and a touch of red. Below them, green dunes meet scalloped blue waves dotted with small sailboats, and a banner reading East End cuts across the corner. The bold red lettering names the village, and the line beneath it reads Summer on Long Island.
