Since opening on MacDougal Street in 1915, Dante has stood at the heart of Greenwich Village, evolving from a neighborhood café serving New York's Italian immigrant community into one of the city's most celebrated dining institutions. For more than a century, its welcoming atmosphere has drawn artists, writers, musicians, and locals alike, earning its place as both a New York City landmark and an enduring symbol of Village hospitality. Today, Dante honors that legacy while embracing a contemporary vision of Italian dining. Thoughtfully restored and reimagined, it pairs modern Italian cuisine with an internationally acclaimed cocktail program, preserving the warmth, character, and community spirit that have defined the café for generations.
Inspired by an original early 1900's advertising poster art, this piece has been created as a vintage Italian advertisement for Dante Aperitivo, the newest chapter in the Dante story located on Bank Street in the West Village. The composition portrays a couple in profile leaning in for (what we think) is a kiss, but a glass of wine in-between, and beneath, cupid floats using the a tantalizing cocktail as his arrow.
