Le Rivage Absinthe Poster: Exclusive Collaboration Edition

Le Rivage is a family-run French institution on New York City’s historic Restaurant Row, carrying forward a tradition that began with the Denamiel family at Café du Soir on East 86th Street before they established Le Rivage on West 46th Street in 1984. Today, the restaurant remains rooted in traditional French cooking and hospitality, pairing the warmth of a French country bistro with the unmistakable energy of Manhattan’s Theatre District.

Among the traditions preserved at Le Rivage is the ritual of absinthe. Served in the classic manner with an absinthe fountain slowly releasing ice-cold water over a sugar cube, the experience recalls the cafés of Paris during La Belle Époque, when absinthe became inseparable from the artists, writers, and late-night characters of French café culture. Le Rivage maintains a dedicated selection of absinthes and continues to serve them using this traditional tableside preparation.

Artwork: Based on a classic C.1902 poster by the great Leonetto Cappiello and reimagined exclusively for Le Rivage, this artwork celebrates the restaurant’s French heritage and its absinthe tradition. Against a saturated golden-yellow background, an elegantly dressed couple shares an intimate café table surrounded by bottles and glassware, while bold black typography announces “LE RIVAGE” and “ABSINTHE.” The rich yellows, reds, blacks, and warm earth tones give the piece the character of early French advertising while connecting Parisian café culture with present-day New York. It is particularly at home in a bar, dining room, kitchen, restaurant, or interior inspired by French bistro and vintage European design.
